Technical eCommerce SEO checklist
| Issue | Fix |
|---|---|
| Faceted navigation duplicates | Canonical or noindex low value combinations; index valuable ones |
| Parameter URLs from sorting | Canonical to the main category |
| Duplicate products in several categories | One canonical product URL |
| Slow pages | Compress images, reduce apps and scripts |
| Thin pages | Merge or improve near empty categories |
| XML sitemaps | Separate sitemaps for categories and products |
Out of stock and discontinued products
| Situation | Best action |
|---|---|
| Temporarily out of stock | Keep the page live, show restock date, suggest alternatives |
| Permanently discontinued, with a replacement | 301 redirect to the replacement |
| Permanently discontinued, no replacement | Redirect to the category or keep with alternatives if it has links |
| Seasonal product | Keep the URL and update it each season |
Google Merchant Center and shopping checklist
- 1Set up Google Merchant Center and verify your site.
- 2Submit a complete product feed with GTINs, brand and accurate prices.
- 3Enable free product listings.
- 4Fix feed errors and policy warnings promptly.
- 5Match feed data with on page data and schema.
Site architecture for online stores
A clear structure helps shoppers and search engines find products quickly. Keep important categories within two or three clicks of the homepage, use breadcrumbs, and link subcategories from their parent categories.
Home

Shoes
Running shoes
Boots
Men
Shoes
Running shoes
Sale
BrandsAvoid creating separate URLs for the same product in different categories. Use one canonical product URL.
Product review and Q and A content
Collect reviews after delivery
Send review requests a few days after delivery, when customers have used the product.
Show reviews on the page
Display reviews in HTML, not only inside scripts, so search engines can read them.
Add product questions
Customer questions and answers add unique content and answer pre purchase doubts.
Use review schema correctly
Only mark up genuine reviews from real customers on the product page.
Internal linking for eCommerce
- 1Link from buying guides to the categories they recommend.
- 2Link related categories together, such as running shoes to running socks.
- 3Add 'customers also viewed' links to spread authority to more products.
- 4Link seasonal landing pages from the homepage during peak periods.
- 5Use descriptive anchor text, not 'shop now' everywhere.
Seasonal and sale pages
Keep evergreen URLs for recurring events such as Black Friday, Diwali or back to school. Update the same page each year instead of creating new ones, so the URL keeps its links and history. Publish updates several weeks before the event so the page has time to rank.
Common eCommerce SEO mistakes
Manufacturer descriptions everywhere
Copied text offers nothing new compared with other stores.
Indexing every filter combination
Thousands of thin filtered pages waste crawl budget.
Deleting out of stock products
Removing pages loses links and rankings; redirect or keep them with alternatives.
Slow product images
Large images slow pages and hurt conversions.
See our image SEO guide for product photo tips.
How to use this eCommerce SEO checklist
This eCommerce SEO checklist is built for stores of any size, from a 50 product Shopify shop to a catalogue with tens of thousands of SKUs. Work through it in order the first time: research and structure come before page copy, and technical fixes come before link building, because each layer depends on the one below.
After the first pass, use it as a quarterly review. Online stores change constantly as products come and go, filters are added, apps are installed and themes are updated. Each change can quietly break something, so a repeatable eCommerce SEO checklist catches problems before they cost rankings and sales.
Each section below includes what to check, why it matters and how to fix common issues. Where a task needs developer help, we say so, so you can brief your team or our eCommerce SEO service.
Pre launch eCommerce SEO checklist
- 1Plan the category tree from keyword research, not from your warehouse or supplier structure.
- 2Decide URL patterns for categories, products and filters before any page goes live.
- 3Set canonical rules for product variants such as size and colour.
- 4Block the staging site from indexing with a password, not only robots.txt.
- 5Write unique titles and meta descriptions for the home page and every top level category.
- 6Install Google Analytics with ecommerce tracking and verify Google Search Console.
- 7Create and submit an XML sitemap that lists only indexable pages.
- 8Test the checkout and product pages on a real phone over a mobile connection.
- 9Set up Google Merchant Center with a clean product feed.
- 10Check that redirects from any old site are mapped one to one.
Launch mistakes are the hardest to undo, because Google crawls and indexes the wrong URLs from day one. Spending a week on this list before launch saves months of cleanup.
eCommerce keyword intent map
| Search type | Example | Page that should rank |
|---|---|---|
| Broad category | running shoes | Top level category |
| Subcategory with attribute | women's trail running shoes | Subcategory or curated filter page |
| Brand plus category | Nike trail running shoes | Brand within category page |
| Exact product | Hoka Speedgoat 6 women's | Product page |
| Comparison | Hoka vs Brooks for trail running | Comparison guide |
| Problem or question | best shoes for flat feet running | Buying guide linking to category |
| Local | running shoe store near me | Store location page and Google Business Profile |
Mapping one primary keyword to one page avoids two pages competing for the same search. Our guide on how to find long tail keywords shows how to uncover the attribute searches that most stores miss.
Category page copy that helps shoppers
Short intro above the grid
Two or three sentences above the products that tell shoppers what the range covers and who it suits. Keep it short so products stay visible on mobile.
Helpful guide below the grid
A longer section below the products answering common questions, such as how to choose a size, which material suits which use and how the range differs from cheaper options.
Links to subcategories
Show subcategory links with real names, for example "waterproof hiking boots" and "lightweight hiking shoes", so shoppers and crawlers can move deeper.
Unique titles and H1s
Each category gets a title built around its main keyword and a clear H1, not a template that repeats the store name twice.
Avoid keyword stuffing
Write for the shopper. Repeating the category name ten times in the copy reads badly and does not help rankings.
See our glossary entry on the category page for more examples.
Product description writing guide
- 1Start with the main benefit in plain words, for example "keeps drinks cold for 24 hours".
- 2Add key facts as a short list: size, materials, weight, compatibility and care.
- 3Explain who the product suits and when to choose it over a similar item.
- 4Answer the top three questions from customer service and reviews.
- 5Use the product name and model number naturally in the copy and title.
- 6Include sizing or fit guidance where returns are common.
- 7Link to related accessories and the parent category.
If you sell thousands of products, start with your top sellers and highest margin items, then work down the list. A unique description on the 200 products that drive most revenue is worth more than thin rewrites across the whole catalogue.
Product variant handling
| Situation | Recommended approach |
|---|---|
| Colour or size only changes | One product page with a variant selector, single URL |
| Variants have separate search demand | Separate pages with unique copy, each self canonical |
| Variant URLs with parameters | Canonical to the main product URL |
| Variant out of stock | Keep it selectable with a clear message or hide it, but keep the page live |
| Bundles of existing products | Own page with unique copy explaining the bundle value |
Getting variants wrong creates duplicate content at scale. Check how your platform handles them before adding new products. Our Shopify SEO and WooCommerce SEO services include variant audits.
Crawl budget for large catalogues
Stores with thousands of products and filters often generate far more URLs than they need. Sorting options, session IDs, tracking parameters, internal search pages and filter combinations can multiply a 5,000 product store into hundreds of thousands of crawlable URLs. Google then spends time on low value pages and may crawl new products slowly.
Check the Pages report and the crawl stats in Google Search Console. If you see large numbers of URLs marked "Crawled, currently not indexed" or "Duplicate without user selected canonical", your store is probably leaking crawl budget. Fix it by blocking sort and search parameters, limiting which filters create indexable pages and using canonical tags consistently.
Keep internal links pointing at clean, canonical URLs. If menus or product grids link to parameter versions, Google keeps discovering them no matter what your robots.txt says. See faceted navigation for filter rules.
Page speed checks for online stores
- 1Compress product images and serve modern formats such as WebP or AVIF.
- 2Lazy load images below the first screen, but not the main product image.
- 3Remove apps and plugins you no longer use, since many add scripts to every page.
- 4Limit third party scripts such as chat, reviews and tracking pixels to pages that need them.
- 5Use a content delivery network for images and static files.
- 6Check Core Web Vitals in Search Console for category and product templates separately.
- 7Test on a mid range Android phone, not only a fast laptop.
Speed affects both rankings and conversion. Our guide on how to improve page speed covers each fix in more detail.
Structured data checklist for stores
| Schema type | Where to use it | What it can show |
|---|---|---|
| Product with Offer | Every product page | Price, availability, shipping and returns in results |
| AggregateRating and Review | Product pages with genuine on site reviews | Star ratings |
| BreadcrumbList | Category and product pages | Breadcrumb path in results |
| Organization | Home page | Brand details and logo |
| MerchantReturnPolicy | Product or site level | Return window and costs |
| FAQPage | Guides with real questions | Clear answers for AI and search |
Validate every template with Google's Rich Results Test after theme updates, since a small code change can remove price or stock data. Read more on Product schema.
International eCommerce SEO
Selling in more than one country adds another layer to the eCommerce SEO checklist. Each market needs pages in the right language and currency, with prices, shipping and returns that match local rules. Use subfolders such as /en-gb/ and /de-de/ or separate country domains, and connect equivalents with hreflang tags so Google shows the right version to each shopper.
Do not rely on automatic currency switching on a single URL, because Google usually crawls from the United States and will only see one version. Translate category and product copy properly rather than machine translating without review, and research keywords per market, since shoppers in different countries use different words for the same product. Our international SEO service handles multi market stores.
Platform specific eCommerce SEO notes
Shopify checks
Watch for duplicate product URLs created through collection paths, edit the robots.txt template carefully and review apps that inject heavy scripts. Shopify handles sitemaps and canonical tags well by default.
WooCommerce checks
Choose a fast host, keep plugins lean, set product category bases cleanly and use an SEO plugin to manage titles, sitemaps and noindex rules for tag and filter archives.
Magento and Adobe Commerce checks
Layered navigation can create huge numbers of URLs, so define which attributes are indexable. Review default title templates and enable canonical tags for categories and products.
BigCommerce checks
Check faceted search settings, set custom URL formats for products and categories and make sure product descriptions are not hidden in tabs that load late.
Link building ideas for online stores
- 1Create a genuinely useful buying guide or size tool that bloggers want to reference.
- 2Run a small original survey of your customers and publish the findings.
- 3Offer products to relevant reviewers and creators for honest reviews, with links marked correctly.
- 4Get listed by manufacturers and brands you stock on their where to buy pages.
- 5Pitch founder stories and product launches to trade and local press.
- 6Reclaim unlinked brand mentions by asking sites to add a link.
- 7Fix broken backlinks pointing at deleted products with redirects.
Most links will point at your home page and guides, so pass that strength on with internal links to key categories. Our eCommerce backlinks service builds store links safely.
eCommerce SEO metrics to track
| Metric | Where to find it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Organic revenue | Google Analytics ecommerce reports | The real outcome of SEO |
| Organic conversion rate | Google Analytics | Shows if traffic is well matched |

| Indexed products | Search Console Pages report | Spot products Google is ignoring |
| Merchant Center free listing clicks | Merchant Center performance | Shopping visibility without ads |
| Core Web Vitals | Search Console | Template speed problems |
Review these monthly and compare against the same month last year, since most stores are seasonal. For reporting help, see how to create an SEO report.
