What Shopify handles for you, and what it does not

Shopify is a solid platform for SEO. It handles hosting, security, mobile-friendly themes, SSL, sitemaps and basic canonical tags automatically, which removes many technical headaches. Many successful stores earn most of their revenue from organic search on Shopify.

It does have limits and quirks. Fixed URL prefixes, duplicate product paths, limited control over robots.txt in older setups and apps that add heavy code all need attention. Shopify SEO is about working with these constraints rather than against them.

Shopify's URL structure

Shopify uses fixed prefixes: /products/ for products, /collections/ for categories, /pages/ for pages and /blogs/ for articles. These cannot be removed. That is fine for SEO, since search engines understand them, but it means URL planning focuses on the handle after the prefix. Shopify SEO often starts with collection pages, which carry most of a store's commercial search demand.

We keep handles short, descriptive and keyword-led, and plan redirects carefully whenever handles change.

Duplicate product URLs in Shopify SEO

When a product is shown inside a collection, many themes link to it with a collection-based URL such as /collections/shoes/products/runner. Shopify adds a canonical tag pointing to /products/runner, but internal links still spread signals across duplicates and waste crawl budget.

We update theme code so product links use the canonical /products/ URL everywhere, which consolidates signals on one version of each product.

Collections as category pages

Collections are Shopify's category pages and usually target the most valuable keywords. Many stores leave them as a grid of products with no text, which gives search engines little to rank.

We add helpful introductory copy, FAQs, internal links to related collections and guides, and optimized titles and meta descriptions, while keeping the product grid easy to shop.

Filters and tag pages

Shopify filters and tags can create many URL variations. Some filtered views match real searches, such as "black leather boots", and deserve indexable pages. Most do not.

We decide which combinations deserve dedicated collections and keep low-value filter URLs out of the index.

Shopify product page optimization

Product pages should have unique titles and descriptions, clear specifications, high-quality images with alt text, reviews and answers to common questions. Copying manufacturer descriptions creates duplicate content across many stores.

We prioritize rewrites for products with the most search demand and margin.

Variants and out-of-stock products

Variants such as size and color usually share one product URL, which is good for SEO. Separate products for each variant can split signals unless there is real search demand for each.

Out-of-stock products should usually stay live with availability messaging and alternatives, rather than being deleted.

Shopify theme speed and Core Web Vitals

Shopify stores often slow down because of large images, heavy themes, many apps and third-party scripts. Slow pages hurt rankings and conversions.

We compress images, lazy-load media, remove unused code, defer non-critical scripts and review apps that add weight.

Shopify apps and SEO

Apps add features but often inject scripts on every page, even where they are not used. Some SEO apps also add duplicate schema or conflicting tags. Uninstalled apps can leave code behind in the theme.

We audit installed and previously installed apps and clean up leftover code.

Structured data on Shopify

Most themes include basic Product schema, but it is often incomplete or duplicated by apps. Missing fields such as reviews, availability or brand reduce eligibility for rich results.

We validate schema and consolidate it into one clean implementation.

Robots.txt and indexing

Shopify now allows editing robots.txt through a theme template. This lets stores block low-value paths such as internal search results or certain filter URLs.

We customize robots rules carefully so important pages remain crawlable.

Blogging on Shopify

Shopify's built-in blog can host buying guides, how-to articles and product comparisons that rank for research searches and link to collections.

We plan content around questions your shoppers ask before buying.

International selling with Shopify Markets

Shopify Markets supports selling in multiple countries with local currencies, languages and domains or subfolders. Correct hreflang and localized content are essential.

We configure market structure and review hreflang and translated content.

Shopify Plus SEO for large catalogs

Shopify Plus stores often have large catalogs, custom checkouts and headless setups. These add technical complexity, especially with headless front ends that rely on JavaScript.

We audit rendering, internal linking and indexation for Plus and headless builds.

Navigation and internal linking on Shopify

Shopify's main menu, footer menu and collection links determine how authority flows through the store. Many stores link only to a few top collections from the menu, leaving subcollections and seasonal collections buried and rarely crawled. Others add dozens of menu links, which dilutes focus.

We design navigation around keyword priorities, add breadcrumbs, related collection blocks and links from product pages back to their main collection, so each important collection receives consistent internal links from across the store.

Using metafields for richer product content

Metafields let you store extra structured information on products, such as materials, dimensions, care instructions, compatibility or ingredients. Displayed well on product templates, this information answers shopper questions, adds unique content and can feed structured data.

We plan metafield structures for your product types, update templates to display them and connect key fields to Product schema so search engines and AI shopping tools can read them.

Reviews and user-generated content

Product reviews add unique text to product pages, answer real customer questions and enable review stars in search results when marked up correctly. Many Shopify review apps load reviews with JavaScript after the page renders, which can make them harder for search engines and AI crawlers to see.

We choose or configure review apps so review content is visible in the page HTML where possible and schema is valid, without adding unnecessary scripts across the whole store.

Shopify SEO and AI shopping answers

AI assistants and Google's AI features increasingly recommend products and stores directly. They rely on clear product data, reviews, buying guides and mentions on trusted sites. Stores with complete product information and helpful collection content are easier for these systems to understand and recommend.

We track AI answers for your key product searches and improve the product and collection content they draw on.

Migrating to Shopify

Moving to Shopify from WooCommerce, Magento or another platform changes URLs. Without a complete redirect map, rankings and traffic can drop sharply.

We map every old URL to its new Shopify equivalent and monitor results after launch.

Measuring Shopify SEO

We track organic sessions, rankings for collections and products, revenue from organic search, Core Web Vitals and indexing status.

Scentira grew from zero to 70k monthly organic visits with product and collection SEO.

Choosing a Shopify SEO agency

Look for an agency that understands Liquid, Shopify's URL rules and app ecosystem, and reports on revenue. Ask how they handle duplicate product URLs and collections.

Top SEO Agency works directly in Shopify themes and reports organic revenue monthly.

Built in vs added

What Shopify SEO covers out of the box, and what we add

Shopify handles several technical basics automatically. Most of the ranking gains come from the work it leaves to you.

Shopify does this for you
✓

SSL and hosting

Every store runs on HTTPS with fast global hosting, so security and uptime are not SEO worries.

✓

Automatic sitemap

Shopify generates sitemap.xml for products, collections, pages and blog posts.

✓

Basic canonical tags

Product pages point to their /products/ URL, which limits some duplicate content.

✓

Editable titles and handles

You can change titles, meta descriptions and URL handles on every page.

✓

Mobile themes

Official themes are responsive, which supports mobile-first indexing.

Top SEO Agency adds this
+

Theme code updated so collections link straight to /products/ URLs, not duplicate paths.

+

Brand, GTIN, reviews and availability in one clean block, with app duplicates removed.

+

Speed and app cleanup

+

Keyword to collection mapping

Why stores invest

Why Shopify stores need Shopify SEO services

Analytics dashboard on a laptop: Shopify SEO services by Top SEO Agency
See what is holding your Shopify store back.Get a quote →

Shopify handles the basics, but store growth depends on fixing its quirks and building strong collections.

Duplicate URLs waste signals

Collection-based links duplicate every product on your store, so search engines split ranking signals across several URLs. Consolidating them is one of the quickest Shopify SEO wins.

Empty collections rarely rank

Most Shopify collections are just a product grid. Without helpful copy and internal links, they struggle to rank for the category keywords that bring buyers.

Apps slow stores down

Every app adds scripts, and many load on every page even when unused. Slow pages lose rankings and shoppers at the same time.

Schema is often incomplete

Theme and app schema often misses brand, GTIN, reviews or availability. Complete markup is what makes rich results and AI shopping answers possible.

International setup is complex

Selling abroad with Shopify Markets needs correct hreflang, translated handles and local content. Small mistakes can show the wrong country version.

Organic sales compound

A collection that ranks keeps bringing buyers every day without a cost per click. That compounding effect is why Shopify SEO pays back over time.

Process

Our Shopify SEO process, from theme audit to organic orders

We start inside your theme code, then move outward to collections, products and content.

  1. 1Audit the theme and appsWe crawl the store, read the Liquid templates and list every app that adds code. You get a ranked list of what is holding rankings back.
  2. 2Fix duplicate URLs and schemaProduct links move to canonical /products/ URLs and Product schema is cleaned into one valid block. Search engines stop splitting signals across copies.
  3. 3Speed up the storefrontHeavy apps are removed or replaced, images are compressed and scripts load only where needed. Core Web Vitals improve on every template.
  4. 4Rebuild collection pagesTop collections get helpful copy, FAQs and links to subcollections and guides. These pages start competing for category keywords.
  5. 5Improve products and guidesPriority products get unique descriptions and reviews in the HTML. Buying guides on the Shopify blog link shoppers to collections.
  6. 6Report organic revenueMonthly reports show orders, revenue and collection rankings from organic search. Next month's priorities follow the data.
Where stores slip

Shopify SEO mistakes we fix

Buyer paying online with a card: Shopify SEO agency by Top SEO Agency

These are the problems we find most often in Shopify SEO audits.

Collection-based product links

Many themes link products through /collections/ paths. We change the theme so every link points to the canonical /products/ URL.

No collection copy

Collections without text rarely rank. We add short, useful introductions and FAQs above or below the grid so shoppers still see products first.

Manufacturer descriptions

Copying supplier text creates duplicate content across hundreds of stores. Unique descriptions give your product pages a reason to outrank them.

Too many apps

Stores often keep apps they no longer use, and some leave code behind after removal. We audit and clean every one.

Deleting sold-out products

Deleting sold-out products throws away rankings and links. We keep them live with alternatives, or redirect discontinued items to the closest match.

Changing handles without redirects

Renaming a handle without a redirect breaks every link to that page. We set up redirects before any URL changes go live.

Pricing factors

What affects Shopify SEO pricing

Catalog size, theme complexity and app count change the work more than anything else.

Catalog size
A store with 5,000 products needs more template, filter and content work than one with 50.
Theme complexity
Heavily customized or older themes take longer to audit and fix safely.
Installed apps
Each app that injects code adds cleanup and testing time.
Content needs
Collection copy, product rewrites and guides are the biggest ongoing effort.
Selling abroad
Shopify Markets, translations and hreflang add work for each country.
Competition
Rival stores with strong authority mean more content and links are needed.
App impact

Which Shopify apps slow stores down the most

Apps are the most common cause of slow Shopify stores we audit. This is how different app types typically affect page speed.

Graph analysis on a laptop screen: Shopify SEO tips by Top SEO Agency

Review and UGC widgets

High impact

Often load large scripts on every page and render reviews late, so crawlers may miss the content.

Pop-ups and email capture

Medium impact

Add scripts site-wide and can shift layout on mobile, which hurts Core Web Vitals.

Page builders

High impact

Inject heavy CSS and nested markup into key templates, slowing product and collection pages.

Currency and translation

Medium impact

Can change URLs or content client-side, which confuses indexing if not configured carefully.

FAQ

Shopify SEO services FAQs

Detailed answers about Shopify SEO from Top SEO Agency.

Are Shopify SEO apps enough?

+

Apps help with tasks like image compression and meta tags, but they cannot plan keyword strategy, write collection content or earn links. Too many apps also slow the store. A Shopify SEO agency covers what apps cannot.

What do Shopify SEO experts fix first?

+

Usually duplicate product URLs from collections, slow themes and apps, thin collection pages, missing product schema, poor internal linking and weak titles. These fixes often lift rankings before any new content is added.

What are Shopify SEO services?

+

Shopify SEO services grow organic traffic and sales for Shopify stores. Top SEO Agency covers audits, duplicate URL fixes, collections, products, speed, apps, schema, content and international setup.

Is Shopify good for SEO?

+

Yes. It handles many basics well, but duplicate URLs, thin collections and app bloat need attention.

Can I change Shopify URL prefixes?

+

No. /products/ and /collections/ are fixed, but handles after them can be edited with redirects.

How do you fix duplicate product URLs?

+

We update theme code so product links use canonical /products/ URLs.

+

Many do. We audit apps and remove unused code.

Should I add text to collection pages?

+

Yes. Helpful intro copy and FAQs help collections rank.

Can I edit robots.txt on Shopify?

+

Yes, through the robots.txt.liquid theme template.

Do you work with Shopify Plus?

+

Yes, including large catalogs and headless builds.

What should I do with sold-out products?

+

Usually keep them live with availability messaging and alternatives.

Do you help with Shopify Markets?

+

Yes. We set up international structure and hreflang.

Can you migrate my store to Shopify without losing rankings?

+

We map redirects for every URL and monitor after launch.

Is the Shopify blog good for SEO?

+

Yes. It can host buying guides that rank and support collections.

How long does Shopify SEO take?

+

Technical fixes can help within weeks. Collection and content gains usually build over 3 to 6 months.

What does a Shopify SEO agency deliver each month?

+

Each month we fix technical issues, optimize collections and products, publish buying guides or blog content, improve internal links and schema and report organic sessions, orders and revenue from Shopify analytics.

Do you work on the theme directly?

+

Yes. We edit Liquid templates with care and test changes.

How much do Shopify SEO services cost?

+

Pricing depends on catalog size, theme complexity and content. Top SEO Agency sends a fixed scope after we review your site.

Can you change Shopify's fixed URL structure?

+

Shopify adds /products/ and /collections/ to URLs and these cannot be removed. They do not stop stores ranking well, so we focus on handles, content and internal linking instead.

Do Shopify apps slow down my store?

+

Many apps add scripts to every page. We audit installed apps and remove or limit those that slow your store or create duplicate pages.
