Every page on your site can have a meta description. Google may show it in search results, or it may write its own snippet from the page content if it thinks that matches the search better. Either way, writing a good one gives you the best chance of controlling how your page is pitched.
Below you will find the ideal length, a simple formula, examples for different page types and the mistakes to avoid. For a full overview of tags, see our glossary entry on meta tags.

What a meta description is and where it shows
A meta description is a short summary of a page that you write in the page's HTML. Search engines can show it under the blue title link in the results, and social apps and chat tools sometimes use it when someone shares your link. Visitors never see it on the page itself.
Think of it as a small advert for the page. The title tells searchers what the page is. The meta description gives them a reason to click your result instead of the one above or below it. Learning how to write a meta description well is one of the quickest ways to win more clicks from rankings you already have.
Where it appears
Google search results on desktop and mobile, Bing results, some AI search citations, and link previews on platforms such as LinkedIn, Slack and WhatsApp when no social tags are set.
Where it does not appear
On the page body, in the browser tab, or in Google Business Profile listings. Those use your page content, title tag and profile fields instead.
What a meta description looks like in code
It sits in the head of the page. Most CMS platforms and SEO plugins give you a field to fill it in without touching code.
<meta name="description" content="Get a free SEO audit in 1 business day. We review technical issues, content and links, then send a clear plan to grow your traffic.">
Ideal meta description length
| Length | What happens |
|---|---|
| Under 70 characters | Often too short to explain the page; Google may add its own text |
| About 140 to 160 characters | Usually shows in full on desktop and mobile |
| Over 160 characters | May be cut off with an ellipsis |
Google truncates by pixel width, not exact character count, so treat these as guides. Put the most important words first.
A simple formula for meta descriptions
- 1Start with what the page offers, using the main keyword.
- 2Add one or two specific details: price range, time frame, location or what is included.
- 3Finish with a reason to click or a soft call to action.
- 4Read it aloud and cut any filler words.

Why Google rewrites meta descriptions
Google often shows different text when it thinks another passage from your page better matches the specific search. This is common for long tail searches, where your description does not mention what the user typed.
Descriptions that do not match the page
If the description promises something the page does not cover, Google may ignore it.
Duplicate descriptions
The same description on many pages gives Google little reason to use it.
Keyword lists
Strings of keywords look spammy and are often replaced.
Missing descriptions
Without one, Google always builds its own snippet.
Meta description mistakes to avoid
Copying the first paragraph
The opening of the page is not always the best summary for a search result.
Stuffing keywords
Repeating the keyword does not help and reads badly. Avoid keyword stuffing.
Using quotes carelessly
Double quotes can cut off the description in some setups. Use single quotes if needed.
Ignoring mobile
Front load key information since mobile snippets can be shorter.
How to write meta descriptions at scale
- 1Write custom descriptions for your most important pages first: home, services, top categories and best guides.
- 2Create templates for large page types, such as products, using fields like name, key feature and price.
- 3Review template output on a sample of pages to catch awkward phrasing.
- 4Avoid using the same description on many pages.
- 5Update descriptions when offers, prices or dates change.
Testing meta descriptions
Change descriptions on a small group of pages with high impressions and low click-through rate, then compare clicks over four to six weeks. Keep changes that lift clicks and apply the lessons to similar pages. Change only the description during the test, so you know what made the difference. For title tags, see how to write SEO title tags.
Do meta descriptions help SEO?
Google has said for years that meta descriptions are not a direct ranking factor. Writing a keyword into your description will not move the page up by itself. So why do SEO teams still care so much about them?
Because the description shapes click through rate. If your result sits in position four and earns more clicks than position three, you get more visitors without any ranking change at all. A clear, relevant description also sets the right expectation, so visitors who click are more likely to stay. That makes the meta description one of the most practical parts of on-page SEO, even though it is not a ranking lever.
Keywords are still bolded
When the searcher's words or close variants appear in your description, Google often bolds them. Bold words stand out and tell people at a glance that the page matches their search.
Better clicks, better learning
A description that wins clicks and keeps visitors happy sends good signals about the page over time, even if the description itself is not scored.
Step by step: how to write a meta description
Here is the process we use for every important page. It takes about five minutes per page once you have done a few.
- 1Search the page's main keyword in Google and read the descriptions of the top five results. Note what they promise and what they leave out.
- 2Write down the one thing a searcher most wants from this page: a price, a fix, a list, a fast answer or a local provider.
- 3Open with that benefit, using the main keyword or a close variant in natural words.
- 4Add one specific detail that makes your page different, such as a service area, a number of steps, a free tool or a turnaround time.
- 5End with a short call to action that fits the intent, such as Book online, See the checklist or Compare plans.
- 6Read it out loud. If it sounds like an advert from a robot, simplify it.
- 7Check the length in a preview tool so the key part shows before any cut off.
- 8Make sure it is unique across your site, then publish and note the date.
Meta description length in pixels, not just characters
Google cuts descriptions by pixel width, not by a fixed character count. Wide letters such as W and M take more space than i or l, so two descriptions of the same length can be cut at different points. Character guides are a handy shortcut, but pixel previews are more accurate.
| Device | Typical visible width | Rough character guide |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop | About 920 pixels | 150 to 160 characters |
| Mobile | About 680 pixels | 110 to 120 characters |
| AI and social previews | Varies by app | Front load the first 100 characters |
Because mobile shows less, put the most important words in the first 110 characters. Anything after that is a bonus for desktop searchers.
Before and after: meta description rewrites
These rewrites show how small changes make a description more specific and more clickable. The business names are examples.
| Page | Before | After |

Meta descriptions for local businesses
Local searchers want three things fast: do you serve my area, can you help with my problem, and how do I contact you? A good local meta description answers all three. Pair it with a complete Google Business Profile, because map results often show above the organic listings.
Name the area naturally
Include the city or neighborhood you serve, written the way locals say it. "Dentist in South Austin" reads better than "Austin TX dentist services".
Mention a trust detail
Opening hours, emergency availability, years in business or a booking option give people a reason to pick you.
Match the page
Each location page needs its own description. Copying one description across ten city pages wastes the chance to stand out in each city.
Meta descriptions for online stores
Store owners often have hundreds or thousands of product pages, so the temptation is to leave descriptions blank or repeat one line. A better approach is to write custom descriptions for top categories and best sellers, then use a smart template for the rest.
{Product name} in {color} and {material}. {Key benefit}. Free delivery over {amount}, easy returns. Order online today.Fill the template from product fields so every page gets unique words. Review the top 50 pages by revenue by hand, because those descriptions earn the most clicks. Our eCommerce SEO checklist covers category and product pages in more depth.
Calls to action that fit the search intent
The best call to action depends on why someone is searching. A buyer and a researcher need different nudges.
| Search intent | Example query | Call to action that fits |
|---|---|---|
| Informational | how to unclog a drain | Learn the 5 step fix |
| Commercial | best plumbers near me | Compare local reviews |
| Transactional | book plumber today | Book a same day visit |
| Navigational | acme plumbing login | Sign in to your account |
How to add a meta description in popular website builders
WordPress
Install an SEO plugin such as Yoast SEO, Rank Math or All in One SEO. Edit the page, scroll to the plugin box and type into the meta description field. The plugin shows a live preview.
Shopify
Open the product, collection or page, scroll to Search engine listing, click Edit and fill in the Meta description box.
Wix
Open the page settings, choose SEO basics and add your description under Meta description, or use the Wix SEO panel to edit many pages at once.
Squarespace
Open the page settings, go to the SEO tab and enter the SEO description.
Custom HTML
Add a meta tag with the name description inside the head of the page.
Meta descriptions and AI search
AI Overviews and chat based search tools usually build their answers from page content, not from your description. But the description still matters. It is often used in the source card or citation, and it helps a reader decide which source to open. A clear, factual description that states what the page covers is more useful there than a sales line.
Describe the content, not just the offer
"Step by step guide to fixing a leaking tap, with tools list and cost" tells both people and machines exactly what is on the page.
Keep the page answer first
Since AI tools read the page, the real work is still a clear answer near the top of your content. The description should match that answer.
Meta description checklist
- 1Unique for every indexable page.
- 2Main keyword or a close variant used once, naturally.
- 3Main benefit within the first 110 characters.
- 4One specific detail: area, number, price range or feature.
- 5A call to action that matches the intent.
- 6No double quotes, which can cut the snippet short.
- 7Matches what the page really says.
- 8Checked in a preview tool on mobile and desktop.
- 9Recorded in your SEO log with the date, so you can measure click through rate later.
How to fix duplicate and missing meta descriptions
Duplicate descriptions usually come from templates: every blog tag page, filter page or location page gets the same line. Missing descriptions happen when pages are published in a hurry. Both are easy to find and fix in batches.
- 1Crawl your site with Screaming Frog, Sitebulb or the Site Audit tool in Semrush or Ahrefs.
- 2Export the Meta Description report and filter for Missing, Duplicate, Over 160 characters and Under 70 characters.
- 3Decide which duplicate pages should exist at all. Thin tag or filter pages may be better set to noindex than given new descriptions.
- 4Write unique descriptions for the pages that matter most first: service pages, categories, top blog posts.
- 5Fix the template for the rest so each page pulls its own name, area or product details.
- 6Recrawl to confirm the counts dropped to zero for important pages.
Measure the effect of a new meta description
A rewrite is a small test. Measure it like one, so you learn what works for your audience and can repeat it on other pages.
- 1In Search Console, open Performance and filter by the page URL.
- 2Note clicks, impressions, click through rate and average position for the 28 days before the change.
- 3Publish the new description and request indexing.
- 4Wait at least 28 days, then compare the same metrics for the 28 days after.
- 5If click through rate rose while position stayed about the same, the description helped. If position changed a lot, the test is not clean, so wait longer.
Keep a simple log of every description you change, with old and new text, date and result. After ten or twenty tests you will see patterns, such as numbers or local area names lifting clicks for your site.
How to find pages that need better descriptions
- 1Crawl your site to find missing, duplicate, too short or too long descriptions.
- 2In Search Console, find pages with high impressions and low click-through rate.
- 3Rewrite descriptions for those pages first.
- 4Check the results after 4 to 6 weeks.
Pair this with our guide on how to write SEO title tags, since titles and descriptions work together.
