Audits sound technical, but the goal is simple: find what stops search engines and people from getting the most out of your site. This checklist groups 50 checks into eight areas so you can work through them in order.
You can run most checks with free tools such as Google Search Console, PageSpeed Insights and the free version of Screaming Frog. If you would like experts to do it, our SEO Audit service delivers a full report in 1 business day.
A written SEO and AI search plan for your site in 1 business day.
Get my SEO plan Chat on WhatsApp- Start with crawling and indexing: if Google cannot see pages, nothing else matters.
- Check speed and mobile experience with real field data.
- Review titles, headings, content quality and internal links on key pages.
- Audit backlinks for both opportunities and risks.
- Prioritise fixes by impact and effort, not by how many issues a tool reports.
Tools you need for an SEO audit
| Tool | Used for |
|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Indexing, queries, Core Web Vitals, manual actions |
| Google Analytics 4 | Traffic trends and conversions |
| Screaming Frog or Sitebulb | Crawling titles, links, redirects, status codes |
| PageSpeed Insights | Speed and Core Web Vitals per URL |
| Semrush or Ahrefs | Backlinks, keyword rankings, competitor gaps |
| Rich Results Test | Structured data checks |
1. Crawlability checks
- 1Robots.txt does not block important pages, CSS or JavaScript.
- 2An XML sitemap exists, lists only canonical URLs and is submitted.
- 3Important pages are linked internally and are no more than three clicks from the home page.
- 4No orphan pages: every page in the sitemap has internal links.
- 5Redirect chains and loops are fixed.
- 6Server errors (5xx) are rare in the Crawl stats report.
2. Indexing checks
- 1Search Console Page indexing report reviewed for excluded pages.
- 2No important pages carry a noindex tag by mistake.
- 3Each page has a self referencing canonical tag pointing to its clean URL.
- 4HTTP, HTTPS, www and non www versions redirect to one version.
- 5Duplicate and near duplicate pages are merged, canonicalised or noindexed.
- 6site:yourdomain.com shows roughly the number of pages you expect.
If you see many pages marked "Crawled, currently not indexed", the usual causes are thin or duplicate content. See our glossary entry on duplicate content.
3. Speed and Core Web Vitals checks

- 1Core Web Vitals report shows most URLs as good on mobile.
- 2Largest Contentful Paint is under 2.5 seconds on key templates.

SEO audit checklist by site type
Local business sites
Focus on Google Business Profile, NAP consistency, location pages, reviews and LocalBusiness schema.
Online stores
Focus on faceted navigation, duplicate products, category content, product schema, Merchant Center and speed.
B2B and SaaS sites
Focus on JavaScript rendering, content depth, comparison pages and conversion tracking.
Large publishers
Focus on crawl budget, index bloat, internal linking and content freshness.
Common SEO audit mistakes
Listing issues without priorities
A list of 300 warnings is not a plan. Rank issues by business impact.
Ignoring business goals
An audit should focus on the pages that bring leads and sales.
Trusting tool scores blindly
Some warnings do not matter. Check each issue in context.
No follow up
Audits only help when fixes are assigned, completed and checked.

Writing the audit report
Start with a summary
Three to five sentences on the biggest problems and opportunities, in plain language.
Rank issues by impact
Group findings into fix now, fix this month and plan later.
Assign owners
Name who will fix each issue: developer, writer or SEO lead.
Add a timeline
Show what will happen in the next 30, 60 and 90 days.
Set success measures
Define how you will know the fixes worked, such as more indexed pages or organic leads.
How often to audit different parts of your site
| Area | How often |
|---|---|
| Full technical crawl | Monthly for active sites |
| Search Console review | Weekly |
| Content audit | Every 6 to 12 months |
| Backlink review | Every quarter |
| Local listings | Every quarter |
| Full audit | Yearly and after big changes |
Quick 15 minute SEO health check
- 1Search site:yourdomain.com to see roughly how many pages are indexed.
- 2Open Search Console and check for manual actions and security issues.
- 3Look at the Page indexing report for sudden jumps in excluded pages.
- 4Run your homepage through PageSpeed Insights on mobile.
- 5Check your Google Business Profile for accurate hours and recent reviews.
- 6Click through your main menu on a phone and test the contact form.
If any of these show a problem, run the full checklist above.
Expert audit tips
Audit templates, not only pages
Fixing one template can fix hundreds of pages at once.
Look at what changed
Compare with the last audit to spot new problems early.
Speak the business language
Explain issues in terms of leads, sales and costs, not only technical terms.
Signs you need an SEO audit now
- 1Organic traffic has dropped for more than a month.
- 2You are planning a redesign or platform change.
- 3New pages take weeks to appear in Google.
- 4Search Console shows a rise in errors or excluded pages.
- 5Competitors now outrank you for your main services.
How to prioritise audit findings
| Priority | Examples | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fix now | Site wide noindex, blocked robots.txt, broken checkout, manual action | Stops all organic visibility or revenue |
| Fix this month | Slow templates, duplicate pages, missing titles on key pages | Clear ranking or conversion gains |
| Plan next | Content gaps, new location pages, link building | Growth opportunities |
| Ignore or batch | Minor warnings on low value pages | Little real impact |
A tool can list thousands of issues. The skill is choosing the ten that will move results. That is the difference between an automated report and a useful audit.
